چکیده

Stability of core-annular flow of water and oil in a vertical circular pipe is studied with respect to nonaxisymmetric disturbances. Results show that when the oil core is thin, the flow is most unstable to the asymmetric sinuous mode of disturbance, and the core moves in the form of corkscrew waves as observed in experiments. The asymmetric mode of disturbance is the most dangerous mode for quite a wide range of material and flow parameters. This asymmetric mode persists in vertical pipes with upward and downward flows and in horizontal pipes. The analysis also applies to the instability of freely rising axisymmetric cigarette smoke or a thermal plume. The study predicts a unique wavelength for the asymmetric meandering waves. Stability of axisymmetric core–annular flow in the presence of an insoluble surfactant

The effect of an insoluble surfactant on the stability of the core–annular flow of two immiscible fluids is investigated by a normal-mode linear analysis and by numerical simulations based on the immersed-interface method for axisymmetric perturbations. The results reveal that, although the Marangoni stress due to surfactant concentration variations is unable to initiate a new type of instabili...

Frequency Aanalysis of Annular Plates Having a Small Core and Guided Edges at Both Inner and Outer Boundaries

This paper deals with frequency analysis of annular plates having a small core and guided edges at both inner and outer boundaries. Using classical plate theory the governing differential equation of motion for the annular plate having a small core is derived and solved for the case of plate being guided at inner and outer edge boundaries. The fundamental frequencies for the first six modes of ...

Vortex and Oil Distribution of Oil-Water Annular Flow through Ball Valve

The study on the flow behave inside of a ball valve is important for heavy crude oil transportation. Owe to the fast progress of the numerical technique, it becomes an effective way to observe the flows inside a valve and to analyze the flow structure of the oil-water core annular flow. In the present study, the simulation of the oil-water core annular flowing through the valve is conducted...

Rayleigh-Taylor Instability in a Finite Cylinder: Linear Stability Analysis and Long Time Fingering Solutions

We consider the Rayleigh-Taylor instability problem of two initially stationary immiscible viscous fluids positioned with the denser above the less dense in a finite circular cylinder such that their starting fluid-fluid interface is the horizontal midplane of the cylinder. The ensuing linear instability problem has a 5D parameter space defined by the density ratio, the viscosity ratio, the cyl...

Exchange flow of two immiscible fluids and the principle of maximum flux

The steady, coaxial flow in which two immiscible, incompressible fluids of differing densities move past each other slowly in a vertical cylindrical tube has a continuum of possibilities due to the arbitrariness of the interface between the fluids. By invoking the presence of surface tension to at least restrict the shape of any interface to that of a circular arc or full circle, we consider th...
